Schuett: Friends do not have to prove themselves

GIBSONBURG, Ohio — "It is the bright people who discuss ideas; the stupid ones talk about other people."

How many friendships are ruined because someone, somewhere along the line of "I'll tell you if you promise not to tell" can't keep his or her tongue under control?

Jeanne and I have been friends since 1946. In all of those years we have never had a cat-fight, stopped speaking to one another, nor have we ever broken a confidence. When either of us confides in the other, it goes without saying: What we discuss here, stays here. And heaven help anyone who wanders into the minefield that protects this friendship.

Never would Jeanne consider coming to me with that old line: "I'm your friend so I thought you ought to know..."

For thirty years Jeanne did not like my husband but she never said so.

Wake Forest's spring football game set for Saturday

Winston-Salem, N.C. — A full Saturday of Deacon sports is planned for Saturday, April 14 including the annual Spring Football Game and the baseball team's contest against Clemson at Hooks Stadium.

Admission to the Spring Game is free. In addition to the scrimmage, there will be a full array of interactive activities designed to give Wake Forest fans an up-close look at the Demon Deacon football program. Fans will be able to hear the team, hear the coaches and get a true feeling of the game with this unique experience that fans can't get anywhere else. It will be a whole afternoon of kid-friendly fun with inflatable games, food, games and meeting with friends.

At 11:00 a.m., a tour of Wake Forest's academic services will be held at the Miller Center. Simultaneously, a strength and conditioning exhibition will be led by Ethan Reeve, Wake Forest football's strength and conditioning coach.

Comment: A case fraught with legal hurdles

Is the Diana inquest a poisoned chalice? Baroness Butler-Sloss's surprise decision to stand down from the inquest into the death of Diana, Princess of Wales an Dodi Fayed means that her successor, Lord Justice Scott Baker, is the third person to take over the troubled inquiry in nearly ten years since the pair were killed in a Paris car crash.

At first hearing, the news was a shock: Lady Butler-Sloss rose to the highest ranks, in her time, of any woman in the judiciary, becoming the most senior family judge as President of the High Court's Family Division.

Her appointment by the Lord Chancellor, Lord Falconer of Thoroton, when Michael Burgess, the Surrey coroner, pulled out pleading pressure of work, seemed an obvious choice: an experienced, safe pair of hands, she had a reputation for efficiency couped with compassion and experience of some of the most heart-rending "life and death" decisions to come before the courts.

Final Four predictions take a thumping

THUMP, THUMP, THUMP! That's the sound of workers hammering new shingles onto my roof as I type this at my home office.

If I were a real sports columnist, I'd have to write on deadline while thousands of fans cheered on the game action. So for today, I get to pretend that I'm typing this from an arena locker room beneath the stands, and the crowd above keeps stomping their feet for a defensive stop.

I've also come to realize that my sons aren't quite old enough for me to bellow "not while you're under my roof" threats. When they're ready, at least I'll be able to snarl, "not while you're under my NEW roof!"

THUMP, THUMP, THUMP! That's the sound of your heart beating as you await my thoughts on the NCAA Tournament. Right? If not, you don't have to tell me otherwise.

Scholar of the Month: Whiz kid's secret? Lots of hard work

The 16-year-old gets top grades, stays involved in a wide variety of extracurricular activities and is already weighing the pros and cons of top colleges.

But the awards and top report cards he's received have been earned, not given.

"Some days are just tougher than others. There's 3 a.m. days and there's 9 p.m. days," said Walch, referring to the time he may knock off from studying.

The West High School sophomore is the Francis Wayland Parker Scholar of the Month for March.

"He works very, very hard," said Diane Demers, Walch's guidance counselor.

Complaining With Tact

Looking for things to complain about, however, is really just looking for trouble. If you have nothing to justifiably criticize (or need to look through a proverbial microscope to find something) then your complaint may be bordering on dishonesty. Instead of filing a non-existent complaint, try something else and offer a compliment. The staff might react just as favorably.
