| W. Bloomfield squeezes by
With one out in the bottom of the eighth inning Monday, and the winning run standing on third base, West Bloomfield coach Pat Watson called for a play he hadn't used in almost six years. A suicide squeeze. "I think I caught my players off guard," Watson said, jokingly. .
Political play of the week: crafty campaigning
Two weeks ago, I said that getting ahold of Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's campaign was the political equivalent of asking the most popular girl in school to the prom. So I was pleased to see that when she eventually came to Iowa City, she was actually quite humble. I introduced myself to the senator at a closed-door meeting with approximately 30 Democratic activists on Tuesday. Her handshake was warm, yet firm. She wasn't as tall as I expected, but I wasn't going to fault her for it (I'm 5-7 - bad news bears trying to get dates). We spoke briefly about her husband and a humorous run-in with the Secret Service I once had. After all the slings and arrows she's had to endure, the 60-year-old senator still looked as lively and upbeat as ever. I'm sure she was excited to hear about her fundraising dominance, a whopping $26 million raised in the first-quarter fundraising season.
Hands-On: Project Treasure Island Z
I am super pumped for Capcom's Wii-exclusive pile of awesome, which currently goes under the please-change-it code name of Project Treasure Island Z. I don't know if you guys know this, but I love wacky Wiimote mini-games and PC adventure games, and that's exactly what we've got here: the love child of Wario Ware and Monkey Island. In fact, have you ever heard of an old Sierra game called Gobliiins? That's what this reminded me of -- it's a series of self-contained adventure game style point-and-click puzzles, but you don't actually know what you're supposed to be doing when you go in. There's plenty of things to interact with, but you have no way of knowing if they're going to help you or kill you before you click on them. .
In 8th year of indoor football career, Jason Quinn shows no signs ...
And few in the history of indoor football have ever done it in more prolific fashion. The Billings Outlaws receiver caught his 150th career touchdown pass in the first quarter of last week's game against the Sioux Falls Storm - and then proceeded to add three more to that total before the game was over. But as much as the 6-foot-1, 220-pound receiver likes to score touchdowns, Quinn's greatest passion is his 10-year-old son, Jordan. Whether it's coaching Jordan's Little League football team to back-to-back Utah state championships in his home town of Salt Lake City, showing someone Jordan's highlight video or simply talking about Jordan, Quinn is one proud papa.Gazette sports editor Mike Zimmer sat down with Quinn last week and talked about his playing career, future plans, and of course, Jordan.
Billingsley still learning
LOS ANGELES - Despite all the early miscues, Sunday's game really got away from the Dodgers when Chad Billingsley took the mound. That's been a common theme. While the Dodgers bullpen has been extremely reliable as a whole, the 22-year-old continues to struggle in his transition from starter to reliever. "I'm still adjusting mentally to coming out of the bullpen," Billingsley said. "I'm still learning. ... It's tough right now. Pitch sequence and setting up a guy is just completely different from starting to relieving." Billingsley didn't fool anyone from Pittsburgh on Sunday. Even his out was a deep fly ball from Jack Wilson (Thousand Oaks High) that was caught up against the wall. But he is putting in the effort to figure out what he has to do differently. After his outing, he went in the clubhouse and watched film of the two-run double he allowed to Jason Bay.
