| San Francisco Giants (9-8) At Los Angeles Dodgers (13-6), 10:10 Pm
(Sports Network) - Barry Bonds and the red-hot San Francisco Giants open a six-game road trip this evening with a stop at Los Angeles for a showdown with the NL West-rival Dodgers at Dodger Stadium. The Giants have won five straight and seven of their last eight games, including Sunday's 2-1 victory over division foe Arizona at AT&T Park. Bonds homered in his second straight game and is 15 shy of tying Hank Aaron for the all-time lead. Bonds' 740th career home run was his sixth of the season and third in four games. Pedro Feliz also homered for the Giants and starting pitcher Matt Cain tossed a three-hitter. Cain (1-1) yielded one hit and was charged with one run with four strikeouts and four walks. San Francisco will send Matt Morris to the mound tonight and the righty is 2-0 with a 2.00 ERA in three starts this season.
Six pedigrees of separation
Some players, like San Jose rookie defenseman Matt Carle, grew up casting tall shadows. Others, like Colorado rookie center Paul Stastny, grew accustomed to living in them. You can infer how these two made good teammates. Stastny has been surprisingly overlooked for much of his hockey life, despite being the son of Hall of Famer Peter Stastny. Back in the day, when the Stastnys had Pavol Demitra over for supper or when he was getting taught "a trick or two" by Slava Fetisov, Paul would get to observing behaviors. "It was so awesome how they all knew and respected my dad," he says. "Its something you remember, for sure." Carle comes from a similar upbringing, only his father, Bob, never played hockey. Rather he is a self-made man, having at one time owned all of the KFCs in the greater Anchorage, Alaska area.
Computer/gaming advice for parents
Following up on my last post about how to decide how much violence in videogames is okay for your kids, here's a list of gaming/computer tips for parents that I've learned over the years. My top ten computer/game parenting tips for geek dads: Try cooperative mode on any game that offers it. Best father-child bonding ever! Make up your own mind about what's appropriate for your kids. I think Halo 2 is fine (cartoonish violence and fictional settings), and Call of Duty 3 is okay for my 9-year-old (accurate historical setting and a war-is-hell message) although not for the younger kids. But I think Gears of War, which is essentially a horror game, is too scary and full of bad language and adult themes, so they're not playing that. Other parents will come to different conclusions.
Ken Mauser appointed new publisher of Journal Star
PEORIA - Ken Mauser is the new publisher of the Journal Star, the newspaper's new owner, GateHouse Media Inc., announced Wednesday. Mauser was previously general manager/interim publisher following the retirement last December of John McConnell, who was Journal Star publisher for more than 25 years. "I look forward to the opportunity and to the chance to continue working with the great employees here and the excellent management team that delivers a quality product to our readers every day," Mauser said after the appointment was announced. "I am pleased I will be able to continue serving our readers, advertisers and the community." That he has lived much of his life in Peoria and is community oriented was one reason Mauser was appointed to the position on a permanent basis, Scott Champion, co-president of GateHouse Media, said Wednesday.
Long journey brings Deng leading role with Bulls
CHICAGO (AP) - His high school coach remembers the six-foot-six kid swishing three-pointers in dress shoes and slacks, unfazed by jet lag after arriving from England the previous night. Luol Deng was 14 and making quite an impression at Blair Academy, a prep school in Blairstown, N.J. - one of several stops on a remarkable journey that began in war-torn Sudan, wound through Egypt and England, and included a layover at Duke before arriving at a leading role with the Chicago Bulls. Yes, he has come a long way. "Things just happen," Deng said. "I think you just live your life. I'm just living my life, and it's just getting better as I'm getting older. For me and my family, it's been great. We've stuck together through thick and thin." The Bulls think so highly of Deng they balked before the February trade deadline at dealing him for Memphis' Pau Gasol or another inside scorer - the final piece that could push them to the top of the Eastern Conference.
Eli Roth Interview
We had a chance to sit down with the legendary Eli Roth to talk GrindHouse, The Cell, Hostel 2 and more! Needless to say this interview is for you die hard horror fans! Eli Roth burst onto the film scene at the 2002 Toronto Film Festival with his debut film Cabin Fever, which he produced, directed, and co-wrote. Cabin Fever polarized alot of horror fans. You either loved it, or you down right hated it. Either way I loved it, and it is to this day one of the more fun horror films in my collection. Produced independently on a low budget, Cabin Fever was the highest selling film at the 2002 Toronto Film Festival, after a frenzied bidding war between seven studios. Cabin Fever went on to be Lion's Gate's highest grossing film (no pun intended) of 2003, opening on 2,100 screens, and has to date grossed over $100 million dollars worldwide in theatrical, home video, and DVD sales.
Four Sega Genesis Game Titles coming to the Wii Shop Channel
Yesterday, Sega announced that four game titles from its Sega Genesis library namely Streets of Rage 2, Toe Jam & Earl in Panic on Funkotron, Shining in the Darkness and Kid Chameleon will soon be available for download via the Nintendo Wii Shop Channel. Each of these Sega Genesis titles will be priced at 800 Wii Points onwards. Streets of Rage 2: To celebrate their defeat of the syndicate exactly one year before, Blaze, Adam and Axel met for drinks. The next morning, Axel received a frantic phone call from Eddie 'Skate' Hunter, Adam's younger brother, whom he was living with on the edge of the city. Blaze and Axel found Adam and Skate's house wrecked and a picture of Adam chained to a wall at the feet of Mr. X. The city then once again returned to its nightmarish state and criminals ran rampant.
