Tomko likes Dodgers chemistry

Pitcher Brett Tomko took some time on Tuesday afternoon before his start against the Rockies to participate in an online chat. The right-hander shared his opinion about a variety of subjects, including the Dodgers chemistry, his switch from the bullpen to the rotation, practical jokes and his painting career.

Brett Tomko: Hey guys. Thanks for taking the time to do this today. Let's get started.

dodgerfanrob22: What has been your favorite memory during your baseball career, so far?

Tomko: I would have to say my first Major League start. I think for anybody, they would have to say that's one of their biggest memories. The funniest thing about it was, I got Gregg Jefferies to ground out to first base and I was covering the base. When I was heading back to the mound, I tripped, which was pretty funny, but it was just the whole night.

King of Oldies

To freshen the vintage products and make for a better value, the King of Oldies often takes two vinyl-era albums and combines them on one CD or bundles them in a double-disc package, in either case priced as if one album. Often, he'll also package six, eight or 10 of those discs in a specially priced and elegantly encased (wooden box) set.

Shopping around Like a kid let loose in a candy store, this visitor went nuts in the Collectables warehouse.

My day (and month) was made finding an exclusive box set of primo years (Colpix label) studio and concert albums by Nina Simone, gems I fondly remembered from my childhood but feared had been lost forever.

I also grabbed a special Collectables grouping of early Elvis Presley albums pressed on heavyweight vinyl, who-knew-these-even-existed concert recordings by Little Feat and Lou Reed, decade-specific rock and soul oldies compilations (boy, have they got a lot of those!), and a CD pairing of two Broadway show-stoppers from Lena Horne ("Porgy and Bess," co-billed with Harry Belafonte, and the underrated, Harold Arlen/E.Y.Harburg-scored "Jamaica").

Lylatwars lands for PAL, Streets of Rage 2 targets VC

Sega have confirmed yet another raft of retrograde ports bound for the Wii's Virtual Console service, confirming that US gamers (and the rest of us in due course) will be getting Streets of Rage 2 to download soon.

Not only is the Streets sequel en route to the game store, we're also told to expect Toe Jam & Earl III: Panic on Funkotron, Shining in the Darkness and Kid Chameleon on the way soon too.

Sega offer no dates on their retrograde hits, though it is expected that the new games will hit the US VC before heading to PAL regions, et al. The games should cost 800 Wii points - much like the majority of Sega's other classics.

In other VC related news, Lylatwars, or StarFox 64, is now out on the Virtual Console in PAL areas and can be yours for 1000 Wii points.

Fine, be that way

How do you know when your baby is mad at you? Well, crying every time you hold him or her may be a big hint... but Cora is different. I learned firsthand last night not to get on her bad side. Don't ask me what I did. I still have no idea.

I got home from work yesterday and Mike and Cora were dressed and ready to go for a stroll downtown. It was a gorgeous day and the town was busy with people bustling up and down the sidewalks. The three of us walked around for a bit and browsed a few antique shops until we decided to hit the park for awhile.

We headed home around dinnertime and while Mike cooked I gave Cora a bath. She and I played in the tub and she was smiling and cooing and splashing her feet in the water just as she always does. And, as always, she cried when I took her out of the tub.

Bearcats blank Oran, 10-0

ORAN - The Dexter Bearcats baseball team blanked the Oran Eagles on Saturday afternoon in the Scott County Invitational at Oran, 10-0 in five innings.

Senior lefty Derrick Chamberlain pitched a complete game shutout for the Bearcats and held the powerful hitting Eagle lineup to only four hits. David Hessling supplied all the offense Dexter would need by going 2-for-3 with a home run and three runs driven in.

“With the wind blowing out and playing them at Oran,” said Dexter head coach Brian Becker, “Chamberlain did a nice job. To hold this team to zero runs and four hits, you just cannot say enough about the job Derrick did. He kept them off-balanced all day long and had them jumping at the ball. He just did an outstanding job for us today.”

Dexter scored a run in both the top of the first and second innings to jump out quickly on Oran.

'Remembering the past allows us to look forward'

Old photographs capture in black and white the landmarks of our lives. But sometime, they pale in comparison to what memory retains in colours and sounds, about the way we were.

Here is one example.

On the border separating July summer afternoon and summer evening, we rode two-wheelers to the canal bank and there watched the setting sun bathe the horizon in fireball orange. Sometime, a laker or saltie would glide across the shimmering water and sailors on deck would wave and shout greetings. When the ship had passed, we would be off on balloon-tire CCM or Huffy bikes to wherever our pedal power would take us.

That was years ago. Career pathways led to different destinations as lives diverged, though sometime touching again, briefly, as years went by.
