| Brian Ward Dives Headfirst into Mobius and "Sonic the Hedgehog"
Last time we heard from Brian Ward, Toon Zone was talking to him via e-mail. This time, in honor of the DVD release of the SatAM series of Sonic the Hedgehog, I drove out myself to Los Angeles and took a look at Shout! Factory in person. Meeting Brian Ward face-to-face, we grabbed a couple of strawberry smoothies from a nearby food spot and sat down to conduct a new interview, half of which follows-up on some of the things he told us back with Captain N, and half of which gets into the nitty-gritty of this fan-awaited cartoon. TOON ZONE NEWS: So, why this? Why Sonic the Hedgehog? Was this something that you pursued, or was it offered to you? BRIAN WARD: Well, we acquired the DiC catalogue a couple of years ago, and started with things we thought would be surefire hits - Inspector Gadget, Heathcliff and the Cadillac Cats, Legend of Zelda, Super Mario - and Sonic wasn't actually part of our catalogue.
Pistons taking care of business in Game 1
Jameer Nelsons wish is six minutes away from being granted. He wanted the Pistons; hes about to find out what Goin To Work is all about. Were going to forego the local broadcast on FSN and watch in HD on ESPN. What? Fox Sports does Tigers games in HD. Why is it so tough to put the Pistons on it as well? Besides, we still get a local announcer in Ann Arbors Mike Tirico win/win. Chris Webber pregame: I try not to think about what the ring means to me, because I would get emotional. When I used to cut out Larry Birds picture and (Michael) Jordans picture and put them on my wall, it was to become an NBA player (dream) one; the second dream is to win an NBA championship. "You dont say, I want to go to the NBA and get this check. Your whole dream as a kid is playing the in the backyard saying Im Magic (Johnson) three, two, one; I hit the winning shot.
Nats' Pitching Less of a Damper
NEW YORK, April 15 -- Rain began pelting the boroughs of this city early Sunday morning, and by daybreak, when the winds began to pick up as well, it was clear that no baseball would be played here. The postponement of the Washington Nationals' game against the New York Mets not only denied the Nationals their first opportunity for a series win in this young season, but it took the ball from the left hand of rookie Matt Chico, still searching for his first major league victory. The oddity: Considering the way things have gone recently for the maligned Nationals rotation, Chico might have beaten the Mets. No topic of conversation has defined the Nationals more through spring training and into the season's first two weeks than their starting pitching, seen around baseball as a group of wannabes and never-weres.

After Imus Firings, Will PC Run Amok?
The political correctness crowd (including the bulk of the mainstream media, the Duke University administration and the Group of 88) was exposed and embarrassed by the Duke case, but not humbled. Example 1: "Since we haven't gone through a normal legal process, we don't know what really happened," said Duke biology professor Sheryl Broverman. "The fact the charges were dropped doesn't mean nothing happened. It just means information wasn't collected appropriately enough to go forward." Example 2: When asked whether Duke would apologize after North Carolina Attorney General not only announced that the remaining charges would be dismissed, but also that a thorough investigation showed innocence and a rush to accuse, Duke University's glib John Burness responded, "for what?" Unfortunately, the political correctness crowd remains as arrogant and opportunistic as ever.

You can get close to Super Bowl fun
When Deb Moore volunteered for Super Bowl XXX in Tempe more than a decade ago, the Peoria teacher saw it as an opportunity to showcase Arizona to visiting fans - and get close to the action. Fired up from that experience, Moore is one of 3,000 people who already have pledged to help with next year's Super Bowl in Glendale. Even though organizers won't formally kick off their volunteer program until next weekend, they're already nearly a third of the way toward their goal of 10,000 sign-ups. "It's about the pride of being involved in something in your community that is significant," said Moore, a 21-year Fiesta Bowl volunteer who teaches sports marketing and hospitality classes at Sunrise Mountain High. "You look back and say, 'I had a small piece in making that successful.' " .
Ways to make your kids smarter
Many parents are bothered by their kids' poor performances at school. However, this report by Sade Oguntola highlights what they can do to make them geniuses. Intelligence, an inherited gift can both be nurtured and enhanced by the right environment. While intelligence clearly has a genetic component, scientific research is beginning to show that certain approaches boost learning and mental development in young minds. The proven strategies for building your child’s brainpower scientists have outlined to include: Playing music: Researcher Nina Kraus, a neuroscientist at Northwestern University, said there is now a concrete evidence that playing music can significantly enhance the brain and sharpen hearing for all kinds of sounds, including speech. "Experience with music appears to help with many other things in life, potentially transferring to activities like reading or picking up nuances in tones of voices or hearing sounds in a noisy classroom better," Kraus said.
